Night Cramps
What are Night Cramps?
Do you experience intense pain in your lower legs? Is this pain followed by hard to the touch, seized up leg muscles that are completely paralyzed? Chances are you are suffering from night cramps.
Night cramps or nocturnal leg cramps are involuntary contractions/spasms in the leg muscles and are painful. You are not alone if you are suffering from this condition. 60 percent of adults are plagued with this highly uncomfortable condition according to American Family Physician.
Like Restless Leg Syndrome, night cramps can cause severe insomnia due to the sleep jarring pain felt during an episode.
To help ease the symptoms of night cramps, one can stretch their legs out forcefully. That stretching will sometimes free up the seized muscles. Night cramps generally let up on their own within 10 to 15 minutes of beginning. Your legs may be sore for an entire day after an episode.
What Causes Night Cramps?
Like Restless Leg Syndrome, experts are unsure of the causes of night cramps. There are however known risk factors that increase the likelihood of suffering from this condition.
Foot position during sleep may be a contributing factor to night cramps. This is because our feet and toes are usually extended away from us during periods of sleep. This position makes the calf muscles more susceptible to cramping because they are shortened in this state.
Other factors that contribute to nocturnal leg cramps include shortening of the tendons naturally over time, prolonged standing, improper sitting positions, sedentary lifestyle, abnormal nerve activity, and even muscle overexertion.
How do you Treat Night Cramps?
Luckily those suffering from night cramps can rest knowing that medical treatment is not generally required. That is because night cramps aren’t that serious. The pain one feels during episodes may seem pretty bad, but night cramps are not likely the first sign of a more serious medical condition.
Try some of these home remedies when you find your legs cramped up.
- Walk on your heels.
- Stretch.
- Apply heat to the affected area.
- Take over-the-counter painkillers for post cramping soreness.
- Massage your legs.
- Drink pickle juice.
